GARDEN AREA

To the righthand side of the hall you will find our garden area – this space is included in hall hire and has a really interesting back-story:

SHAUGH RED

Shaugh Prior has traditionally been an area of apple production with Bickleigh Vale, adjacent to Shaugh parish, having some 60 to 70 acres of orchards in its hey-day. The favoured apples included the ‘Shaugh Red’. In 2017, we celebrated an Apple Day which has since taken place most years in October. In the last few years an intensive search for the Shaugh Red has been carried out – so far, to no-avail – by the Hall. Although all local farms have apple trees, many orchards have fallen into disrepair and no trees are named.  We have therefore decided to adopt a ‘red apple’ as the motif for the Hall in honour of the now fictitious Shaugh Red.

THE COMMUNITY APPLE ORCHARD

This small south-facing orchard lies next to the Hall; it is planted with apples found locally and was opened by the late Sarah Chester of RHS Rosemoor in 2017. It is a pleasant place to sit in good weather with granite seats, a BBQ and moveable tables and chairs.  There is a walkway that runs through the garden. This is under-pinned by rubber matting for wheelchair access. The orchard has been funded by Balfour Beatty, Big Lottery, Portworthy and Newnham Solar in recent years.

The hall is available for hire at only £12 per hour. We welcome regular hirers or one off events by arrangement through the Booking and Event Secretary, Alisha West

shaughpriorvillagehall@gmail.com

For events we require a refundable deposit of £100 against any hire.
